Summary:
On the night of their graduation, Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew meet for the first time. Is it a one-night stand or something more? They do not know, but it is something. With their whole lives ahead of them, and the possibility of never meeting again, they vow to keep in contact somehow. Life, however, throws hurdles in their way.
Will they realise that the answer to all their problems is standing right in-front of them, or carry on blissfully unaware?
Review:
Usually I am not a fan of the typical romantic, boy-meets-girl novels which are often found at the top of the charts. However, surprisingly, I really enjoyed this book and found it really hard to put down!
My favourite aspect of the book are the two main characters, Emma and Dexter. I loved these characters!! I thought they were very well developed, had a great background story to them and changed and evolved as the story went on. The relationship they had with each other was also very well developed and sustained throughout as it kept me turning the pages and coming back for more! I think what really makes their relationship work is the fact that even though they are the complete opposite; they are perfect for each other and each overcome the other one's flaws.
Similarly, their relationship is paralleled in their lives and the plot's progression. Where one character's life is on the up; the other seems to be going drastically wrong. I love the balancing act Nicholls plays with their lives and how it adds to the tension in the plot and between the two characters.
However, for me, the ending really let the book down. I found the ending over-stretched and a bit of an anti-climax. If something major happens (you'll understand what I mean if you read the book) just end the book there; do not stretch it out for another hundred or so pages, it just ruins the impact and shock of the event! I therefore fell that the last chapter, or so, is a bit pointless...
Rating: 8/10. Nice, easy and enjoyable read.
