Review:
Just so you know, I was asked to review Sword of Empire: Centurion by the author himself as I am doing work experience with his publishing house, Endeavour Press. I have also previously reviewed it's prequel Sword of Empire: Praetorian (my review can be found here).
Like with Sword of Empire: Praetorian I was a bit wary of reading a book from the historical fiction genre; but I actually quite liked it.
Foreman's writing style is much the same as his previous book as there were little snippets of humour and references to modern culture embedded in the plot. This kept the book interesting and relaxed throughout. These aspects make it a really easy, quick read.
As the book is a sequel, the characters introduced in the first book are ever present in the story. What I really liked about the characterisation within the book is that each character was well developed and had their own motives and goals throughout. Also, as the book picks up three-years after the events in Sword of Empire: Praetorian; you can really see how the relationships between the characters, and the characters themselves, have developed and progressed.
However, I still had the same problem as I did with the previous book. It needs more gore. End of. Compared to the previous book; there is a tiny, little bit more but the gore is few and far between.
Rating: 6/10.
