Review:
I have finally read a book.. and it was a good one!
Okay, so I loved the film and after my boyfriend listened to the audiobook (I have tried to encourage him to read more) I was desperate to read the book. As I am still in my final year at university with tonnes (literally) of assignments, I wanted a nice, easy read to help me relax at the end of a long day. The Martian was perfect for this!
What I particularly loved about this book is that it really did keep me on the edge of my seat... and not many books have done this! Although I already knew the story, the plot was exciting and suspenseful nonetheless. I think the reason why it is so engaging is that it makes you think what you would do in that situation... plus Watney is the perfect protagonist; charming, funny and really clever. One night, I ended up reading until midnight which was not such a good idea seeing as I had to be up at five thirty in the morning... it was totally worth it though.
One thing I did struggle with with the sciencey parts. My boyfriend is an astrophysicist so he (obviously) had no trouble understanding the chemical reactions and experiments Watney gets up to. I, however, just stared at the page and tried / pretended to understand it. This aspect did not hinder my enjoyment of the book and I would still recommend reading it, as long as you do not mind overlooking a few sentences every now and then.
Rating: 10/10... The best book I have read in a while! Go and read it now!
