Review:
Firstly I would like to say that a year ago, before by boyfriend disappeared to America for the year, he let me borrow his entire collection of the A Song of Ice and Fire books. One year on, I can proudly say that I finished reading them all one week before he came home for good! Yay!
Usually I really struggle to read the books from the A Song of Ice and Fire series but, for some strange reason, I could not put this installment down. Maybe it was because the stories of the characters are getting really good and going in different and new directions... or maybe it was because this book was only 500 pages long instead of a daunting 800! Either way, I actually loved this installment and read it in less than a week!
As I mentioned, Martin has taken the stories of the different characters in so many different directions; it is really interesting. I particularly love Cersei's, Jon Snow's and Daenerys's stories as they are so different from where and who they were in the first book. These three are easily my favourite characters due to this. This is a big difference from my favourite character in the first book, Arya, as I feel Martin has ruined the character and there is no plot progression anywhere; she is just stuck far away from anyone with no real purpose. I am hoping that somehow her story is turned around and saved in the following installments.
What I also love about Martin's writing style, which become evident in this book, is how he can make you wonder where a character is purely by not following their narrative for a while. You begin to wonder the same things that the characters in the book are, making you think that they might actually be dead; even when they are not!
There is a long way to wait for the next installment for the series, The Winds of Winter, so myself and many other fans of the series will have to wait to find out what happens next and get the answers to them awful cliffhangers! However, it does not look like we will get our questions answered anytime soon :(
Review: 10/10. My faith in this series is restored :)
