Review:
On one of my many visits to the Warner Brothers Studio Tour London, I bought the Hogwarts Library. This collection, which was written by J. K. Rowling (under the names of made up authors) for Comic Relief some years ago, contains three books; Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp, Fanstastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander and The Tales of Beedle and the Bard. As they are are essentially Non-Fiction books set in a Fictitious world, I think the genre classification, Non-Fiction-Fiction seems most appropriate?
Firstly I would like to say that these text books are excellent and I really wish my university text books were as entertaining, accessible and as easy to read as they are! Lord knows it would make writing essays and doing assignments much, much easier!
However, what really makes these books so amazing is the way in which they reveal more about the inner workings and history of the world of Harry Potter. It really demonstrates the amount of thought and detail that went into the creation of the Harry Potter series and how much of a genius Rowling is!
She is amazing.
The added notations from Albus Dumbledore, in The Beedle and the Bard, and from Harry and his friends, in Fanstastic Beasts, really add value and humour as well. Especially in the case of Dumbledore, they reveal more of the personality from an otherwise secretive character in the main series.
Many may argue that they are a bit short - at just under a hundred pages each. I, however, think that they are exactly the right length and serve the as the perfect tie-in series by providing some background detail and information to the main Harry Potter books. Although they do not offer anything new; they help answer unexplained questions and thoughts on the wizarding world. Perfect for any fan.
What is even more exciting is that there are rumours of a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film! After reading the book, I can tell that it is going to amazing!
Rating: 9/10.
