Review:
I decided to read this book after my best-friend raved about it constantly. However, I was not impressed with her taste in books (which is usually impeccable) this time as I had two major issues with it...
Firstly, it took me ages to get into it. The pacing of the plot was all wrong. I found it started off slow and then got even slower spending too much on the boring parts of the story and not enough time on the exciting and action filled scenes. I mean, I only really started to get interested in the book in the last one hundred pages! If it was not for my determination to never leave a book unfinished; I would have given up and classed it as a write-off immediately...
Secondly, I felt whilst reading it that it was a book written specifically to be made into a film. Whilst there is not anything wrong with this, you can certainly tell that it has used ideas and narrative structures which have been hugely successful previously (think Hunger Games-esque). For me, this ruined the whole story. Therefore if you maybe want something a bit different that will challenge you; you are better of finding a different book.
One a positive note however it is a good, little read which is perfectly designed for young adults and contains many staple and relatable features of the genre. Similarly, the characters are engaging and well developed.
Rating: 6/10. I can see why people like it, but not really for me.
